Empowering Artists through Grants and Mentorship

Apply for a Grant

Flazéda is releasing two $5,800 grants to support artists in creating new work in 2025, as part of the Performance for Purpose Program. Applications close 5 January 2025.

This initiative supports artists to develop transformative shows that reflect their unique experiences and visions.

Each grant includes:

  • Funding: $4,000 cash to support show development, materials, and resources.
  • Mentorship: Access to industry experts, guidance, and resources (including one week with Jazida valued at $1800).
  • Community & Visibility: Opportunities to showcase work within a supportive network and connect with audiences.

FAQs for the Performance for Purpose Grants

1. Where is the funding coming from?
The grants are entirely self-funded by Jazida, as part of a personal commitment to uplifting artists and fostering meaningful art.

2. Why are you doing this?
I believe in fighting individualism and strengthening community by empowering artists, who are the true architects of change. This initiative reflects that belief.

3. How are the grants assessed?
Applications will be reviewed by a panel that includes Jazida, Imogen Kelly, Mama Alto, and Dale Woodbridge Brown.

4. What is required of successful applicants?
Successful applicants must:

  1. Utilise the $4000 cash towards the development of the show. If you desire to spend less money than that, you can explain how much you need in the budget. This funding is for creation of work and not presentation.
  2. Participate in a one-week development program (online if needed).
  3. Credit the project as "Supported by Flazeda".
  4. Present their show publicly, even as a preview (these costs are separate to the funding).
  5. Submit a brief acquittal report detailing the use of funds and mentorship outcomes. (A template will be provided to you)

5. Can I apply for additional support or mentorship beyond the grant?
Absolutely! This grant is here to help, not limit you. If Flazéda can support you further with letters, workshops, or advice, just ask. However, if you already have access to mentorship, consider letting this opportunity uplift someone else.

6. When will I find out the outcome of my application?
You will be notified of the outcome in January, following the assessment process.

7. Can I apply if I don't identify under any of the listed intersectionality matters?
Yes, anyone can apply. However, priority will be given to voices from underrepresented communities, as identified through data-driven considerations like those in the ACT Women’s Plan. If your work is targeting a specific demographic that needs uplifing, please explain who and how you plan to curate the show to support them.

Please note that this opportunity is only open Australian artists.
Artists can apply to this program as a soloist, or a group up to 4 people max.

8. Does my show need to tell a vulnerable or autobiographical story?
No. The focus is on creating entertaining performing arts. Your unique perspective should inform your process, but your show doesn’t need to explicitly reflect your personal experience.

9. How will funding this make a difference?
Diverse voices on stage lead to better representation, and representation matters. Supporting unique stories uplifts the whole arts community.

10. What is the code of ethics clause?
The initiative upholds a commitment to safe, inclusive environments. Grants will not be awarded to individuals with a history of abuse or those knowingly supporting abusers. Applicants affirm these values when applying.

11. Is there a reporting mechanism for ethical concerns?
Yes. Concerns can be raised confidentially through our feedback form at Flazeda Feedback Form.

Our data shows that what we are doing is making a difference. Market research into our past customers (students and audience) conducted by the Millhouse Clinic at University of Canberra shows that:

  • We create safe space, with 14 times as many LGBTQIA+ people in our community than in other spaces.
  • People come to our artforms looking for something (something special) and the spaces we curate help them connect… Not just externally with others, but also internally with their own damn selves! Over 89% of people said it enhanced their mental health or that of those around them.
  • People who were unhappy in themselves were able to experience radical self-love and self-actualisation. People who had previously in their lives felt like they had no option but to resort to eating disorders and self-harm have found a space where they can feel happy with themselves.
